Chelsea Carnes completed an internship with SPOHP and participated in both the Mississippi Freedom trip and the Appalachian Change field research trip. While working at SPOHP she founded the Florida Queer History Project in June of 2016 in response to the Orlando Pulse massacre. Chelsea graduated from the University of Florida summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and a Minor in Ethnomusicology. She was recently accepted into the Family, Youth, and Community Sciences Master’s Program at UF. In 2013, she started a non-profit that uses music and performance as a platform to encourage self-esteem in young girls, Gainesville Girls Rock Camp, and still serves as the camp’s Director. This vignette features clips from an interview conducted in 2016 in which Chelsea discusses the impacts of heteronormativity on her childhood and the catalyst to her interest in History. Translation of the above: Immigrants come to the United States for many reasons, for economic, political, and family reasons. Hence, they should not be viewed and a single entity, since each one has different circumstances and distinct goals. Some come legally and with economic resources, others do not. Some have university degrees, some are illiterate. There are those who have family waiting to welcome them here; and there are those who come to make their way alone. But when they arrive, they face similar challenges: learning English, finding housing, work, and community, adapting to a very different culture. All of them struggle, all of them stumble. Each one of these immigrants has overcome obstacles, and in this video they offer advice to the recently arrived, to those who are en route, and to those who are thinking about leaving their country. Allen Quinn Jones, better known as A. Quinn or "Prof" Jones, was the principal of Lincoln High School when it opened in Gainesville in 1923. In 1926, under his leadership, Lincoln became only the second African American high school in Florida to receive state accreditation. Prof Jones retired after a thirty-four year tenure as principal of Lincoln, in which time he oversaw the success of many students who went on to become business leaders, politicians, doctors, lawyers, and professors. His house has recently been turned into a museum which holds copies of a number of SPOHP transcripts relating to Black history in Gainesville, and SPOHP has several interviews with A. Quinn Jones himself, both in the Alachua County (AL) collection, and the Fifth Avenue Blacks (FAB) collection. It is safe to say that few people in this life are remembered with the kind of reverence that the community continues to hold for A. Quinn Jones. This vignette features clips from an interview with A. Quinn Jones in which he discusses how Lincoln High School became the second accredited Black high school in the state of Florida. During the Tampa Oral History Association conference in October of 2015, Executive Director Cliff Kuhn remembered his favorite OHA stories that we see here. The stories were filmed October 16, 2015.
